It is not a matter of whether or not we are aligned with developers, or the condition of development that has preceded us. I am aligned with the reality that the Washington metropolitan region is growing at an ever increasing rate and that there will essentially be solid development from Richmond to Philadelphia in the not to distant future. We are in the epicenter of this growth. BRAC is just the tip of the iceberg that will impact us. I am for quality reasoned growth. It is nice to muse about how quiet things were when we strolled around our little mall and sat on the green turtles, but those days are gone. With a burgeoning population increase, we have to look at the big picture.
Our infrastructure is aging in every aspect – electrical distribution, sewer and water facilities, a non-existent public transportation system, and most importantly, an upside down development policy that encourages annexation of tax dollar sucking residential development and throws obstacles in the path of revenue producing commercial and other public service supporting activities.
I want to take a proactive and more imaginative role in defining our future growth and development to preserve the environment we have left, and to direct and enhance our future growth to a higher level. I want the City to be the leader in using state of the art techniques and new concepts of development. I want all of the citizens to take an active role in forming the concepts and dreams for this City.
That’s how we can make Bowie a better place in which to live and work.
