DEVELOPMENT
It is imperative that the city develop and actively pursue its own programs and policies for growth and development. The question is how to control the growth to achieve the kind of development we desire and from which we can benefit. The Council should be an advocate for quality development to remove itself from the continuing adversarial position it takes with other levels of government and the private sector.
NEW CITY HALL
Bonds and other funding sources must be investigated to reduce the financial impact of the facility on the taxpayers. Perhaps plans for the new city hall should be shown to the public and placed on the ballot. The City must also demonstrate creative reuse of the existing city hall to support other programs in the city and to ensure that the surrounding neighbors do not lose their residential quality of life.
COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT
A strong commercial base, consisting of balanced retail commercial, office and other support-ing activities is necessary for the financial stability of the city and to reduce the tax burden on residential development. A more positive attitude and partnership should be taken with devel-opment proposals.
Of particular interest is the viability of our existing commercial centers. Especially strong consid-eration for mixed use at Market Place should be investigated. The central location of this parcel and proposed uses will have significant impact on the surrounding community since there is little opportunity for buffering or transition.
MELFORD
The validity of the covenants upheld by the Court puts the City in the drivers seat in these negotiations; however, some compromise and conditions on both sides will be required. Protection of the Melford House, its historic vista, provision of desperately needed senior housing, and other positive initiatives should be actively sought.
MEDICAL SERVICES
The City must work to secure the continuation of the Bowie Health Center and promote the development of a full service hospital in the city, perhaps integrated with the Health Center. Real initiatives are needed to preserve and improve our Bowie Health Center.
CITY SERVICES
The City will have to work more efficiently, upgrade an aging infrastructure, including water and sewer facilities, streets and transportation, administrative facilities, social services, and create programs required by our existing population and an influx of new residents demanding the better life.
CONSTITUENT SERVICE
Through all of my community volunteer work, my work as an officer in the National Federation of
Business and Professional Women, and in my tax preparation business, I have acted as an advocate for the people I represent. I am prepared to extend this same effort to my work on the Council by keeping in direct touch with the people I represent. I will conduct periodic town meetings to discuss pertinent issues, and be constantly available thru e-mail or the phone on urgent matters.
